TrueDialog Integration

Message templates store pre-written messages that you can use in the TrueDialog Messenger and Mass SMS tools. Templates can be used in single and mass SMS messages and include dynamic content. This article shows you how to create a new template, add dynamic content, and import your templates from the TrueDialog Portal.

Because the TrueDialog integration uses Salesforce Email Templates for message templates, you will create and edit your templates in the Classic Email Templates section.

If creating a template for messaging Campaign objects, use CampaignMember in the template name and when adding dynamic content. See the instructions below for more details.

New Template

  1. Click the Settings Gear icon to open the settings menu.
  2. Click Setup.
    Click Setup
  3. Enter classic email templates in the search box.
  4. Click Classic Email Templates.
    Click Classic Email Templates
  5. Click the Folder dropdown.
  6. Select SMS.

The SMS folder, created by the TrueDialog integration, already contained two example templates. However, you can create your own folder and add templates to it instead of using the SMS folder.

    Select SMS Folder
  7. Click New Template.
    Click New Template
  8. Select the Text template type.
  9. Click Next.
    Select Text
  10. Check Available For Use.
  11. Enter the template name in the Email Template Name textbox.

The field for the template name must include the following three items in any order: SMS, object type (for example, Contact or Lead), and a descriptive name. For Campaigns, the object type must be CampaignMember. Putting the descriptive name first is recommended because the SMS messaging app will cut off the end of long template names when listing all available templates. The template name used in the guide is Example SMS Contact.

    Check Available and Enter Name
  12. Click the Template Unique Name textbox to auto-populate it with the Email Template Name with spaces replaced by underscores.
  13. (Optional) Enter a description of the template in the Description textbox.
  14. Enter any text in the Subject textbox.

The Subject field is required for the template form but will not be sent as part of the SMS message.

Enter Template Unique Name and Subject
  15. Enter your SMS message in the Email Body textbox.

See the Dynamic Message Content section below for instructions on adding dynamic content, like user names, to your message.

  16. Click Save.
    Enter Template Message
  17. Once saved, you can view the details of your template.
    Completed Template

The Send Test and Verify Merge Fields button is for emails only and will not test your SMS template.

Dynamic Message Content

  1. Create a new template by following the instructions above until you reach the point of entering the SMS message.
  2. Scroll up or expand the window to see the Available Merge Fields section above the Step 2 section.
    Available Merge Fields
  3. Click the Select Field Type dropdown.
  4. Select the object type for this template.

For example, Contacts select Contact Fields, and Leads select Lead Fields. But for Campaigns, you must choose Campaign Member Fields. For other object types, select their corresponding object fields.

    Select Contact Fields
  5. Click the Select Field dropdown.
  6. Select one of the fields from the Standard Fields section of the dropdown.
    Select Standard Field
  7. Once you select a field, the dynamic variable for the field will be displayed in the Copy Merge Field Value textbox.
  8. Copy this variable to the place in your message you want the dynamic content.
  9. Click Save.
    Copy Value to Template
  10. Once saved, you can view the details of your template.
    Completed Template

Import/Refresh Templates From TrueDialog
